I’m moving from my current location to a 1 bedroom apartment and I need to buy a new bed. I need help guys.
After doing my research, I’ve come to conclude that Memory Foam matresses are great products because they create better air circulation and conform to your body (meaning extra comfort), however I’ve also learned that Latex mattresses are durable and anti-allergent.
Here is what I’m looking for and I need help! I toss and turn a lot of my bed, and have been for years. I know that because my body is naturally always warm, I need to toss myself to lose the heat and normally push to a cooler place on my bed. So this is a big deal for me. In addition, I want something that is allergy free, because I am allergic to dust and ragweeds.
I’m not as concerns about my allergies as much as my comfort. I want to sleep like I’m dead, and I need help finding this. I live in Washington DC and its COLD here. With this said, I want to also not want to buy a mattress that will freeze on me.
What are your thoughts? I’m leaning towards a memory foam.
You’ve made a few great observations here:
You sleep hot and don’t want to buy a mattress that adds to that
You toss and turn a lot
Since memory foam is temperature sensitive, it will become firmer in a cold room
Memory Foam Mattresses made from American foam don’t tend to sleep hot like those made from foreign foam. There are also waterproof mattress protectors that not only aid in cooling you while you sleep, they are also dust mite resistant and anti-microbial.
You may be tossing and turning, primarily, to lose heat but you may also be developing pressure points from your current mattress that will be greatly diminished by memory foam. You may toss less with memory foam which will allow you to wake more refreshed.
I live in a cold climate and we sleep with no heat. I never have a problem with my memory foam mattress feeling too firm from this. The only time it happens is if we leave for a few days with the heat turned down to 55 degrees.
When we arrive back home, the mattress is very firm and cold. We usually put an electric blanket on the mattress to warm it. (Using an electric blanket on the low settings wont’ harm your mattress as some suggest).
As for latex, you can check the references below for more insider tips. Latex tends to be much firmer, in general, than memory foam.

There are some essential features which must be taken into consideration during the purchase of an adjustable bed. Checking the base of the bed is very important. It is the base that has the adjustable feature so proper working of its motor is necessary. The adjustable beds of reputed manufacturers will provide maintenance-free motors and at 1 year full warranty with 20+ years of limited warranty coverage. This will ensure your adjustable bed experience is stress-free and has long life. If you do not want to invest too much for a bed, then you can purchase a second-hand adjustable bed at a lower cost. This will also be an economical option suitable for some people. Do keep in mind though that most manufacturers only offer warranties to the initial purchaser.
Check what options of movement the bed has and find out how it works. All adjustable beds will have a moving upper part, most have an adjustable leg section, and some even have a separate knee adjustment and height adjustment. Look at the cost factor as well. The retail price, shipping charges, handling costs etc. all have to be taken into consideration before buying the bed. There is vast information available about the adjustable beds in the market, and on the internet, which will make it easier for you to purchase one at a better price and research about the products as well.
It will provide you comfort and relieve all the stress after hard day’s work and, most importantly, it will wake you up to a better tomorrow. A quality adjustable bed is a purchase you will not regret. Even younger individuals are finding that they sleep better and wake up more refreshed, and an adjustable bed is one piece of furniture you can expect to last for a long time.
Adjustable beds can be configured to alter their shape in order to alleviate pain attributed to certain medical conditions and ailments. Some adjustable beds may qualify for a medical deduction. Physicians prescribe the use of an adjustable bed for a number of physical ailments and conditions. Check with your physician or health care professional and insurance company to see if you may qualify for a deduction on the purchase of your new adjustable bed and which types are covered.
Adjustable beds are generally prescribed for individuals who suffer from acid reflux, debilitating back pain, hiatal hernias, sleep apnea and many work related injuries. In the event that either you or your loved one happens to have a problem with snoring, you will be ecstatic to know that an adjustable bed can alleviate or eliminate snoring from certain causes.
If you’ve ever tried lying down on a Tempur-Pedic mattress you’ll have experienced how firm it felt when you first laid down on it, only to then immediately have experienced a sinking feeling as the mattress molded to your body shape. This is because memory foam is visco-elastic, meaning it uses your body heat to contour to and support your body. This makes memory foam unique from other mattresses and foams. Memory foam also differs from latex and foam because the bubbles found in latex and foam are closed, i.e. the air contained in each bubble can’t escape. The memory foam mattress developed by Tempur-Pedic uses an open cell structure whereby air can be passed from one bubble to the next when heat and pressure are applied.
Tempur-Pedic mattresses are great for relieving backache, eliminating pressure points and eliminating disturbances from a partner’s movement. It feels quite different lying down on a memory foam mattress compared to an inner-spring mattress; with memory foam you get a slight sinking feeling when you first lie down on it as it molds to your body, with springs you have metal being pushed up against you while gravity pulls you down. The Tempur-Pedic mattress (as with all memory foam mattresses) has suffered from heat build-up in the past; naturally, memory foam is quite poor at drawing away body heat and many complained of sweaty nights. Tempur-Pedic and others looked at this problem and have developed more advanced memory foam that helps dissipate body heat by utilizing an open celled structure which allows for air movement.
Tempurpedic mattresses are considered to be one of the finest-quality mattresses currently available in the market. These are very expensive, however, which means not everyone cannot afford it. While the amount charged may be worth the quality and comfort offered, today’s consumer has many other options such as toppers and other manufacturers. It is advisable to shop for a memory Foam Mattress that has a density of at least 4 lb and up to 6 lbs as this is the range in which you will find the most comfortable and durable mattresses. A quality memory foam mattress of 5 lb normally last for more than 10 to 20 years.

I’ve been experiencing mid back pain on my right side after being asleep for about 4 hours for over a year now. It hurts so bad, I just have to get up to relieve the discomfort, and then I am fine the rest of the day. We just replaced our 8 year old Kingsdown mattress (after we’d already purchased a 4 inch Sealey memory foam topper for last year) We just purchased a Telluride from Denver Mattress, it is a medium firm pocketed coil with latex foam on the top. I’m still having the exact same problem.
I sleep on my side with a pillow between my knees. We’ve had the new bed for 3 full weeks now, if I am going to return it to try something different, I will have to do so by next weekend.
I think you can see from your own description that back problems cannot be resolved with a mattress. You’ll Keep buying them and they will fail to resolve your problem. They are made in essentially a cookie cutter design one size fits all. You simply need to try various things. Each time you try something new you need to wait out the adjustment period of about 30 days. This is the time needed to get used to something new in a mattress, topper, pillow etc.
Books, doctors, chiropractors, and strengthening exercises are your best bet.

latex, foam, or spring.
Obviously this question is wide open because we don’t know what price point you are considering.
In what can be afforded by Mr. and Mrs. C I prefer all natural latex Dunlop or Talalay. Not the ones with fillers or blends like 70/30 polyurethane foam etc.
I like OMI, Land and Sky, Green Sleep
Good Memory Foam that breathes with good base foam. Tempurpedic is the best but there are very good knock offs like Isotonic and Ecomfort.
Coil Spring mattresses I am not a big fan of. In general they do not hold up well. Good handmades do but they are ridiculously expensive.
Check out a website called http://www.whatsthebest-mattress.com/ there you should find a lot of help.

Our mattress is wearing out and hubby is starting to complain about back pain. Both of us are starting to have trouble sleeping. We’re currently using an innerspring mattress.
Just a few things, neither of us are particularly lightweights. I weigh about 180 lbs and he’s about 250 lbs. I know any mattress we get won’t last long (we’re working on it but its slow going).
Its also very hot at night. We live in New Orleans so heat is normal, and hubby seems to just generate heat like nothing I’ve ever seen. He’s always hot to the touch.
I personally have a problem. I need something that will adequately support my left leg (or cradle it) due to a very severe car accident I had in 2004. The last thing I need is something that won’t support it.
So we need something that can handle out weight, and isn’t going to make us hotter.
What do you suggest?
I have been looking at latex because of its durability but I’ve been hearing that it increases the amount of heat and thats the last thing we need.
Due to our weight, I think a memory Foam Mattress wouldn’t do us any good unless its at least a foot and a half thick because we’d hit the board underneath.
But the innerspring mattresses aren’t exactly the most comfortable.
What are your suggestions?
Memory Foam is going to generate heat, not latex. You need to look at Latex based on your weights and sleep issues. Check out http://www.mattresshero.com and look at their Eco Latex Lineup. They offer free shipping and a 90 day sleep trial.

My fiance and I are looking into getting a latex mattress topper (NOT memory foam!).
Most of our shopping is being done online, and while the reviews are good for both 2-4" pads, we’re not sure how much is really necessary.
We want to make our bed more comfortable, but with the large price difference per inch, we really don’t want to get a thicker one than we need.
If anyone has used a 2 or 3" latex mattress topper and had good results- or poor results- we’d like to know.
Which thickness would you recommend?
There is a distinct difference.
If you were to lay both on the floor and lay on them you would bottom out very quickly and the latex would seem harder in a 2′ inch version even if the ILD or IFD were the same. The other big difference is the process of making the latex: Dunlop or Talalay. Dunlop is denser like a pound cake and Talalay is more like an angel food cake. Even with the same ILD they would feel different. I have a slight preference for Dunlop but over all if you like a very cloud like feel you may want to consider Talalay. I prefer the 3"
What is IFD or Initial Force Deflection?

My wife and I were looking for mattresses and just discovered the whole latex mattress phenomenon. The full latex mattresses were too expensive, but what do people think about options like 1-2" of latex over a foam core (this is what Serta sells)? Is this a good idea? Is this enough latex for a good mattress that will not deform and will last over many years?
The problem with so called latex mattresses that only use one or two inches of latex is that the other materials like polyurethane foams, polyester fiber, etc. compress very quickly. Latex mattresses that are only built from latex top to bottom can last 15 -30 years. They are not new phenomenon and have been around since the late 1930’s. The phenomenon is that people are only now learning about their advantages and sustainability in a day when regular mattresses break down quickly, are not sustainable.Better late than never.
What’s so great about Latex?

No they are not, but you can get a Latex topper for a Mattress or a mattress that has latex built into the top. Check out http://www.mattresshero.com or http://www.lovemymattress.com for either one

I have been hunting around for the best type of mattress for myself and my partner to sleep on.
I have looked at memory foam but have heard they get hot and that wouldnt suit my partner, as he suffers with severe eczema. I have looked at latex but he has a latex allergy and I would have thought this type of mattress might aggravate his skin too!
I really want a comfortable mattress and a strong one (as he is on the heavy side!) But I dont want to be spending too much money - my budget it £300.00
Can anyone recommend anything that might be suitable taking into account his allergies??
Stephanie has the right idea for the pillows and a protecter for the bed.
I too have allergies and hubby is heavy ~ we just recently purchased a sleep number bed ~ it’s the best!!!! Works well for both of us as we have issues with back & neck problems ~ AND allergies!!

If you’re trying to market your mattresses then offer a couple of free ones to a big hotel chain and if they accept then you can get their endorsement. simple yes, it works. some will say no , but you’ll be surprised at the bigger chains accepting them. How do you think the bigger chains got bigger. By keeping most of their money of course. Think about it. makes sense right. Try it , all you gotta lose is a few mattresses and look what you’ve got to gain. Go for it. Good luck
