Which is better-foam or spring mattress?

I am buying a new king size mattress. I dont know which direction I should go. It should be firm and help me with my lower back problems. Any suggestions?

First… I think you should check with your doctor to see if he/she is aware of any studies that point to one type or the other being better for back problems. Then go mattress shopping and test (to the extent you can in the store) a lot of them till you find "the one". Take several days/weeks if you need to…

Honestly you couldn't pay me to sleep on a Foam Mattress much less spend $1000+ on one! I've slept on them in hotels…. and for me…initially when you lay down they feel great! But then… as you sleep they kind of envelope you and it's hard to turn over. And… they are HOT!!! They seem to absorb body heat and radiate it back at you. But that's my experience. The point is everyone has a different experience. If memory serves :-) I seem to remember reading about a hybrid type mattress that was basically a spring but was topped with a layer of foam.

Consumer Reports has a lot of good information on mattresses (link is provided below). In addition to ratings there is a weath of other info. I also included a link to a hot tub forum where there was a lengthy discussion on mattresses. Really its more of an anecdotal discussion but you might pick up a few brands you want try. And I believe this thread referenced a mattess forum that you might want to check out. Keep in mind some of the manufacturers have a xx day satisfaction guarantee.

Good luck!

Spring mattresses last longer, but foam mattresses are better as far as getting quality sleep and comfort.

I can relate with the back problems. For years we had foam mattresses and they were good. Then when we shopped around for our last mattress, I thought for some reason a spring mattress might provide more comfort. I regret that decision, as I find the springs are not very comfortable.

I also have lower back problems and i've been told NOT to go with a full foam mattress, it makes you sink and could make it worse, if anything get a spring mattress and get a foam pad for comfort.. you will come out cheaper and happier!
