Are latex mattresses worth the extra money they cost?

My wife and I were looking for mattresses and just discovered the whole latex mattress phenomenon. The full latex mattresses were too expensive, but what do people think about options like 1-2" of latex over a foam core (this is what Serta sells)? Is this a good idea? Is this enough latex for a good mattress that will not deform and will last over many years?

The problem with so called latex mattresses that only use one or two inches of latex is that the other materials like polyurethane foams, polyester fiber, etc. compress very quickly. Latex mattresses that are only built from latex top to bottom can last 15 -30 years. They are not new phenomenon and have been around since the late 1930’s. The phenomenon is that people are only now learning about their advantages and sustainability in a day when regular mattresses break down quickly, are not sustainable.Better late than never.
