Which type of mattress is best for me?

I’m 14, and I have a hard time sleeping. I toss and turn a lot before I fall asleep, and it usually takes me a while to fall asleep. I feel sore, groggy, exhausted- basically, still half asleep when I wake up. I have MINOR scoliosis (so it’s not that serious, YET), so I have back pains sometimes.
So, I need a mattress to help me with all this stuff. And I kind of prefer something that’s on the firm side. So should I get a mattress that’s memory foam, latex, gel, spring (though I really hate spring mattresses), a futon, tempurpedic, intellibed, sleepnumber? I was considering an ikea mattress with a tempurpedic topper, but I’m not sure which ikea mattress?
Keep in mind, I’m about to start hardcore marching band soon, AND I’ll be walking around school for 8 hours. I need a mattress that will give me a REALLY good night’s sleep.
All help is appreciated!

A mattress that is not too hard or firm is best for you. Try going to a mattress store to try them out before you buy. Lay on it for a while and see how comfortable you can get. If you are getting a memory Foam Mattress, there are different density and thickness to choose from. I would suggest that you try out to see which one you like most before you buy.

What is the best overall mattress?

I’d try a mattress pad first, just because its cheaper. Also, try taking a melatonin pill about 30 minutes before you go to bed. Its a all natural pill. It helps calm you down and makes you drowsy.

First Ikea makes cheap stuff. Nothing wrong with that. But a great topper on a cheap mattress is not going to help it is still a cheap mattress. You need to lay on some mattresses and find one that feels good to you. Lay on them for awhile, not just a few moments. I prefer a pocket coil mattress or a good memory foam. Most of all innerspring mattresses have the same coil units inside made by a company called Legget & Platt. so shop by comfort and not by name. Cross the futon mattress off your list too!

I don’t think anyone can really tell you which mattress is right. Ultimately, you and you alone will have to make that decision. Consider devoting a weekend or two to mattress shopping and find one that really feels comfortable. Be wary of aggressive sales tatics, especially ‘bait and switch’…luring you in with a low price then trying to sell you a higher priced model. And most important, do not buy any mattress, no matter the brand name, unless the store offers a liberal return policy. Most will give you 2 weeks to 30 days to try out the mattress.

Be aware also that a firm mattress is not always the best choice for someone in your situation. "Firm bedding for a bad back" was the mantra for years, but new research suggests otherwise.

Choosing a mattress is a personal preference. I sold mattresses for years and I too have scoliosis but mine is severe. I have always suggested a very firm mattress for people with bad backs. (My chiropractor told me that he and his wife sleep on a piece of plywood covered with an egg crate.) A foam mattress will conform to your body and does not support your spine correctly. If you choose a soft mattress, your hips will sag and create or intensify your back pain. This is a tough decision since mattresses are non returnable. Good luck and take care.
