Do I need a specific type of Mattress? (with Slatted Bed)?

I am thinking of purchasing this bed frame from Ikea.com. However, i see there is a reference to a ’slatted bed base’ and mattress, which are not included.
All that Ikea has for sale is Foam Mattresses.
My question is..
can i just use any regular queen size mattress to go w/ bed frame? or do i have to purchase a specific type (i.e, the ones Ikea sells)

Here’s a link to the bed:

http://www.ikea.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?topcategoryId=15558&catalogId=10103&storeId=12&productId=60995&langId=-1&categoryId=16173&chosenPartNumber=S59838969

Will it ever be used for back-breaking sex?

Where can I buy a large piece of foam?

"Mattress length: 74 3/8" . . most American queen mattresses are 80" long. Consider a platform bedbase, firm talalay latex mattress, and a wool fleece pad.

Under the product specs, it says that it comes with solid slats already. I don’t think you need the slatted bed base. Basically all you need is a mattress, thus the style platform bed.

You don’t need a special mattress, it just means that you don’t use a boxspring.

I am using a quality innerspring mattress on an Ikea slatted base with no adverse effects. It is much more comfortable than the relatively thin mattress sold by Ikea for the bed. If the size is right, go for it.

I HAVE A BED VERY SIMILAR. YOU WILL NOT LIKE ANY MATTRESSES IKEA HAS TO OFFER. I BOUGHT THE BEDFRAME FROM IKEA AND USED MY OLD MATTRESS. MAKE SURE AND PUT SOME BOOKS OR WOOD UNDER THE BED.–IN THE MIDDLE FOR SUPPORT OR YOU WILL HAVE A BIG INDENTION IN THE MIDDLE OF YOUR MATTRESS AND NOT ENOUGH SUPPORT FOR YOU BACK

The first answerer is correct. This is not a standard size bed. Queens are 60×80. Full is 52×74 and twin is 39×74. You also have eastern or standard king at 76×80 and california king at 72×84. So this is either a typo or a special size mattress that will be difficult or expensive to replace/purchase in the future. Or you will be stuck bying a queen mattress that hangs over the edge.

But to answer your question, platfrom beds are very low to the ground and are designed to be used without the box spring. This can change the feel of the mattress as the amount of support is usually decreased. Some mattress manufacturers require a suitable box spring to be used with the mattress or you will void your warranty.

If this is for a child then likely you will not have many problems with weight, support, or size issues as you can simply replace the bed in a few years. If however, this is for an adult or especially more than one adult, than you need to seriously consider the above.

No you don’t have to use a specific type of mattress if you get a foam one you will be able to feel the slats. I have a slatted bed frame and i use a thick mattress that is double sided pillowed. Meaning that it has a cushion on the top and the bottom so you can flip it over. Which in my opinion is the best as when you have slept on one side of the mattress for like 6 months or so it starts to get all you body groves in it and you can flip it over. Hope this helps

i have one of these ikea beds, any mattress will work fine as long as it is the right dimensions. The slatted board base is a seperate piece you have to buy and the mattress goes directly on top of it. They are like a roll of wood planks.

as for specs, im not sure.. but i own a bed similar to the one you are considering, and all i can tell you is to get a firmer mattress than you would for a bed with a boxspring.. to me it seems that the slats dont offer as much support to the mattress. you should also flip your mattress more often as well

I have a similar bed. It is slatted. I just bought a queen size
pillow top set and it works fine. If you aren’t sure, call the store
and ask. They may tell you that you have to have something
different. Look at the way the bed is constructed. How different is it from your present bed? Ok? Good luck. I like the bed shown.

You could, but honestly it will take away from the slatted bed base. You should get the mattress from Ikea if you are going to buy a base anyway. Generally regular queen size boxspring mattresses are too high. It will look silly, if you are looking to save money, you might as well just put the mattress on the floor and forget about the slatted bed base.

Looks like this bed does not have room for a boxspring so you will need to find a mattress that does not require a boxspring to make it work properly.
I would go down to your local mattress store and ask them what mattress you should use.
I know there are two types of boxspring systems. One type actually has springs in the boxspring the other type has no spring.
I have a beautyrest and it does not require a boxspring.

You should have asked the salesperson who sold it to you. I would go to IKEA and ask the guy/woman who sold that particular purchase.

I bought a slatted bed from ikea and I chose whatever mattress I wanted. I got the hasselbeck and I love it. It really shouldnt matter and you have 30 days to exchange it if it doesnt work out for you. Just dont remove the plastic from the mattress you purchase :)

    Good Luck

You can use just about any mattress on to of the slats. I grew up with IKEA (store in my hometown in Denmark opened years before I was even born) and we always had a normal innerspring mattress on top of the slats. Just watch the measurements as IKEA often is made for European standard sizes.

We have just bought a bed base and separate mattress. The bed base is slatted and when we were looking for a mattress we were looking at the "Silentnight Miracoil" spring system. Because the base is slatted and the mattress has springs, we were advised that they would go together alright if we put something like hardboard over the slats to form a full base. This was simply because the springs would not be fully supported on the slats, and some of them would go through the gaps thus not allowing the mattress to work properly…
This is the one we bought and we got it on offer from Costco so we paid a really good price for it….others we were looking at were over £500…I don’t think so !
    http://www.silentnight.co.uk/product.aspx?pageID=220&pGroupID=13&prodId=67

It’s worth making sure that you get a really good mattress that will support your back fully and help you to get a good nights sleep. The one we choose doesn’t have to be turned either which is a great help as we are getting older and the mattresses just seem to be getting heavier!

Looks like it takes a mattress and no box spring. Make sure you check it out because …. my daughter bought a slatted bunkbed and you can feel the slats on the thin mattress they sell with it. Check this one out. You may have to throw plywood on top of the slats if it is uncomfortable.

It doesn’t sound like a foam mattress would last very long.

Have you thought about buying a futon? It would probably work very well with the Ikea bed. By the way, they are very comfortable. If you can’t screw the slats into the bed frame, I would drill holes in them so they can be secured.

It looks like a futon, sort of. My futon is wooden and slatted. I know I would choose a better mattress than a foam one, however.

DO NOT BUY THIS BED ! I can accept that it is a inexpensive bed but furniture from IKEA is not good quality and you will end up with sore back and broken bed in no time.
I just had to say that.
    Good luck.

I would be sure that what they are referring to is the good old box spring and slat setup that a lot of beds have. No you cannot just use a matress with this frame because it requires a set of box-spring or a sub-base under the mattress..and the the springs or sub-base sit on the slats across bed rails or frame rails in the bed. If you look at the photo closely from ikea, you will notice there is a gap between the bottom of the bed and mattress. I would say you need to get queen size "box springs" which should be fairly cheap…or not buy the frame because it won’t work without the sub-base. If you lay the mattress on slats it will not stay and kill your back, plus matress will be intented about a foot..since box springs are usually about a foot thick. Most matresses new come with box springs standard. I would buy the matress from someone other than Ikea and put it in their frame if I liked the bed. I can image a foam roll up matress would not sleep well…no matter how high-tech it is. If the bed is going to be used for some serious action….(sex) you will need something better than just foam anyway. I would say that for some serious action it would be nessesary to have a bed with either box springs and a thick matress, or a platform base….solid wood under a matress. Otherwise…the matress will self-destruct…like 2-3 of my last ones have before I bought a good pillow-top and box springs…

    hope this helps.

Most mattress’s will do. Just avoid air and water filled ones. The concept just doesn’t work with them. Save some money though and just put blocks under the legs of your frame at the end you want higher.
