Moving a 12 month old to a ‘big boy bed.’?
What would be the best way to introduce him to his new bed?
All it is, is a Queen sized Foam Mattress on the floor of his new bedroom..
He has to move to a big boy bed as with his cot he keeps getting his legs jammed in the bars and will wake quite a few times through the night screaming as he can’t get them out… Last night it was 5 times.. Bumpers do not work, as he has an obsession with pulling them down, or putting his legs up over them.
Lay in it with him until he falls asleep (or sleep in the bed with him!). So when he wakes up and your not there, he’ll know that it’s ok to sleep in a big boy bed without mum there!
Good luck!

You won’t be being ‘dishonest’. You’ll be teaching him he can sleep in a big boy bed without mum there!
We say my sons up early in the day. We already had his toddler bed set laying in his actual crib for a little while. Then we used the same set when he went to his actual toddler bed. Its Toy Story. He loves those movies. He slept better in it than he ever did in his crib.

"Sleep" with him on it. Then when he’s asleep go to your own room. If he finds out you left say you got thirsty and or had to use the restroom. Unless he finds you in your own bed tell him you got up to get a drink, or whatever, and then forgot you were sleeping in his room tonight.

Do not lie with him until he falls asleep and then leave. This is being dishonest to him and will make him associate his new bed with you leaving him. It will also make it harder for him to "trust" sleep if he falls asleep with you there and then wakes up and you are gone.
You could start by putting the mattress on the floor of your lounge room, put on a DVD that he likes at nap time and lie him down with his usual comfort items if he has any. Then when he is used to sleeping on the mattress in the lounge room, move it to his room. When you put it in his room it would probably be best to remove all his toys and double check there is nothing small on the floor (or in cupboards or drawers that he can open) that he can pick up and choke on.
If he will not stay on the mattress you could also try cuddling him until he is almost asleep and then moving him to the mattress while he is still awake.
You could just try your normal bedtime routine, just with putting him on the matress instead of the cot. He may surprise you and take to it right away.
